Going to the toilet shouldn’t be a dangerous proposition, but it sometimes is.

Many girls in rural areas of Pakistan and India go to the toilet outside since there are not many options. While working in the menstrual health field in India for many years, we have seen this need come up over and over again.

Oftentimes, the girls wait until night, so as not to be embarrassed, but are followed by men and boys who are curious or have intention to attack them. We have encountered a few rape cases leading to unwanted pregnancies because a girl had no safe place to use the toilet.

When families have several girls, we are highly motivated to get them a toilet in or right near the home. This solves many issues for the family and keeps the girls comfortable and safe. Basics like a toilet can be such a blessing for the whole family.
